Acupuncture Points that Treat Anxiety

Acupuncture points that treat anxiety have been used by acupuncturists for thousands of years. These acupuncture work 80% of the time for the treatment of anxiety.  These points work even better when they are paired with other acupuncture points that work best when they are matched up with the personality type of the person being treated.

Three famous acupuncture points that treat anxiety include:

  1. Acupuncture points that treat anxiety – Yintang

The acupuncture point called Yintang or “Hall of Impression” is found between the eyebrows and has a very calming effect on the body. The pineal gland is 3.5 inches deep. It stimulates the pineal gland. The pineal gland regulates the body’s functioning and acts as a relay center to the stimuli that comes into it from all areas of the body. By regulating the pineal gland, you can regulate many functions in the body and stimulate the relaxation response. In yogic traditions this is also known as the “Third Eye”. It is called hall of impression because the brain is considered the crown, and this is the hallway that leads to the inner workings of the brain.

This point is typically needled with a thin half inch needle that goes in many be 0.3 to 0.5 millimeters. The skin is pinched upwards and the point is inserted briskly with little to no pain.

2. Acupuncture points that treat anxiety - Si Shen Cong

Si Shen Cong or “Four points to alert the brain” is a four-needle combination has a strong effect on the aggressivity area in the brain. Its calming effects is legendary among acupuncturist. It has the added ability to increase mental focus and is a favorite point to self-needle by acupuncture students when they are studying!

This point is found on the head and the four needles are inserted on a 15-degree angle. The needles go to the seventh layer of the skin in the head so don’t worry, you cannot nick the brain! If the angle and depth are done this way, very little to no pain is felt. I like to call this the “smile” point because people feel so relaxed that I have seen locked grimaces in stress hardened faces soften and turn upwards in a smile. When a person feels that they can relax and reduce their anxiety, it can feel so uplifting that patients can smile after the treatment

3. Acupuncture points that treat anxiety – Anmian

Anmian or “Quiet Sleep” is a point found behind the ears on the mastoid bone. Many nerve endings in the bone located behind the ear are used to calm the body and “Quiet Sleep” is one of them. here help to induce a deep relaxation response and in classic texts it is used to help people with sleeping problems.

The needling of these points is done on an angle downward and are easy to access and tolerated by the patient.

Needling one or more of the acupuncture points that treat anxiety can literally be mood lifting. Now if the patient is too anxious about getting these acupuncture points needled because they are located on the head, rest assured there are many other points that are located on the wrists, knees, ankles that can be used as well.

Acupuncture has been popularized for pain, but more and more people are choosing acupuncture for treating their anxiety. The problem for most is they do not know that acupuncture can treat anxiety. Acupuncture points for anxiety show the use of acupuncture for treating anxiety does exist and has been firmly established for thousands of years.
