Treating the 4 anxiety types with Chinese Medicine

May 8, 2015 By Joshua Goldstein, Ridgewood Acupuncturist

Anxiety affects thousands of people across the US. However, there are subtle differences in how people present with anxiety. Your anxiety can have different symptoms than someone else. So instead of a “one-treatment-fits-all” approach, Chinese medicine provides custom treatments. Chinese medicine practitioners, pick up on subtle manifestations, symptoms, and impressions of how the anxiety affects you. Here are four general personality types that can help the practitioner guide treatments so they fit your specific needs.

Uptight type:

This type of anxious person has become generally inflexible, is uptight, and tends to believe that things are “supposed to be” a certain way. Generally, they have tightness in the top of the shoulders and neck, tend to clench their jaw or have teeth grinding or some lower back or sciatica pain. They may walk rigidly and plant their feet very deliberately, feel impatience, and tend to hate to delegate tasks, because there is “usually” only one way to do something and they do it the best. These types tend to have difficulty with sleep, experience some digestive issues such as constipation or gas. These types are drive and are achievers who pride themselves on getting things done and done right. The world would not continue to revolve without their consistent efforts and their drive for perfection. But it has its costs. Working on allowing them to relax both physically in the muscles and mentally is really going to allow them to feel comfortable in letting some of the perfectionism go, which will help them immensely.

Jittery type:

This person is jittery, nervous, has a generalized uncertainty and may feel somewhat fearful. Reaction to unexpected news is very exaggerated. These types are hard to unwind and relax, and have difficulty sleeping. In addition, there may be physical symptoms such as of sinus issues, or asthma, or intestinal issues such as irritable bowel or chron’s disease or general difficulty with digestion. This person suffers because there have been too many disappointments in their life and states of sadness.

Exhausted type:

This type of person lacks energy to tackle projects, feels unmotivated, has difficulty finding meaning in life, has a tendency to feel depression along with the anxiety along with the feelings of lack of motivation. This type of person may have been disappointed many times in life and now sits in the sadness of it all.

Overheated type:

Sweating, hot flashes, feelings of intolerance to heat, this type craves cold food like yogurt, refrigerated fruit such as melons, and ice cold drinks. This type of person is not having a long term infection, but feels hot all the time. Thirsty, more irritable, dryer stools or skin also show the heat rising out of the body. Treating this condition needs to help cool down the body. This type can be seen with any of the other conditions.

Any pattern can be mixed with another, but one type usually shines through. If you are looking for more help with your anxiety, you may want to consider getting help with alternative medicine. Acupuncture and Chinese medicine seek to help the symptoms of anxiety, but as you can see here, it also seeks to treat the root causes which brings us to the different personality types
