Pain and medication
Find out why people are looking to acupuncture for their pain relief!

If you are looking for acupuncture for pain relief near Ridgewood NJ! Information out there is very difficult to wade through. From esoteric explanations and lack of real information that consumers want to read up on, it can be very difficult to wade through the material. Here are have pain and are looking into acupuncture for pain relief, you can be sure the information out there can be very difficult to wade through to learn about acupuncture for pain relief. Here are 5 elements you need to know about acupuncture for pain relief near Ridgewood NJ!

Point #1 Acupuncture for Pain Relief near Ridgewood NJ!- Acupuncture works physiologically to control pain by releasing neurotransmitters to affect perception of pain:
All the way back in 1974, a research group proved that acupuncture increases pain threshold. First, they performed acupuncture on an animal and then injected its cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) into another animal—one that did not receive acupuncture. What was noted was remarkable.
The animal that didn’t receive any acupuncture had a higher pain threshold than before. This is known as neuro-modulation. Neuro-modulators are opioid peptides. Four of them have been confirmed to release during an acupuncture treatment. One in particular, beta-endorphin, plays an important role in acupuncture analgesia. Studies show that beta-endorphin is released in pain patients receiving acupuncture whereas a control group had no increased numbers of this neuro-modulator. So, there is a scientific basis for acupuncture.

Point # 2 Acupuncture for Pain Relief near Ridgewood NJ!- To get the pain relief you are looking for acupuncture needs repetitive treatments to get the final effect of no pain:
Many who are not really understanding of acupuncture can have pretty strange perceptions about it. Some think it is a one deal thing and it either works all the way or it doesn’t. But the truth is to get the pain relief you are looking for acupuncture done repetitively will help bring the pain down and control it or eliminate it altogether. There is a cumulative effect with acupuncture so it needs to be done regularly. One of the reasons why acupuncture is so successful in China is that the medicine I set up that people can get treated daily for two weeks or even twice a day.The one thing that stands out here is the word “FREQUENCY” and “REPETITIVE TREATMENTS”. Obviously, it is not feasible to get treated this frequently for most people in the US but treating two or three times a week to reduce the acute pain is necessary and will speed up the process. Because the one killer for successful acupuncture treatment is people’ expectation. The body does respond, but it takes repetitive treatments to do it. Acupuncture as uncommon as it may seem, is not the same as folk healing. Acupuncture works physiologically that means you get the pain down, it returns, you get it down again, and then repeat that until the intensity of pain reduces, and the inflammation reduces as well.

Point # 3 Acupuncture for Pain Relief near Ridgewood NJ!- Treating pain in one area can cause you to become aware of pain in another area!
Many times the area that you feel pain in, is the only one that you fixate on. When you are experiencing pain the vice like grip it has on you makes it hard to even feel any other areas of pain. However, when you are making progress many times when you start to feel relief you it may feel as if the pain has shifted to another area. This does not mean that you are feeling worse but rather it is a good sign of recovery. This secondary area of pain actually always been there but the primary pain is starting to lessen in intensity so you are now feeling the secondary pain comes to the fore. In fact, this secondary pain might be the actual cause of the pain. That is why it is important to treat the pain until all the pain is gone. The treatment should shift to treating the secondary pain as well. Many times a back pain in the lower back can be caused by a secondary area of pain further up or due to severe tightness in the buttocks that creeps up to the buttocks. Many times, this pain is caused by chronically tight muscles that get exorbitantly tight until they tighten up and affect the nerves causing neurogenic pain.

Point # 4 Acupuncture for Pain Relief near Ridgewood NJ!- Going to an acupuncturist may seem really really weird so many don’t try it!
Acupuncture doesn’t have a lot of media support nor a hospital attached to it. So, there is little public awareness about acupuncture and of its benefits. So many times people feel as if they are stepping out of the bounds of “normal” reality and frankly this can feel W.E.I.R.D. But pain keeps it real enough for some to buck the trend. It forces you to look for help in many different places. I recently had a prospective patient call and leave me a message that he was looking into acupuncture for his back pain but he admitted he didn’t know anything about it and he wanted to find out how to start. His statement is actually the starting point for most people entering the arena of acupuncture. If it works most people don’t care where they get help. People just want to know that you won’t hurt them and that you will do your best to help them achieve pain relief. So as an acupuncturist we have do a little “catch-up” and do an abbreviated “mini”-education (like I am doing here) about acupuncture so people aren’t totally in the dark about it. Once patients see that acupuncture is not going to cause pain and that it is not as invasive as an ear piercing or a tattoo, people take to it rather quickly. The key to it is an acupuncturist who is patient and kind and takes that time to explain things to them and guides them through the process.
Point # 5 Acupuncture for Pain Relief near Ridgewood NJ!- How many visits do I need for acupuncture for pain relief?
This is a complex question and it is one that is most frequently asked. One factor is it depends on the severity of the pain. If the pain is a muscle versus a tendon there is more healing time needed for tendons over muscles as a sprain from a cleanup in your backyard over the weekend or being a weekend exercise warrior is going to be a lot shorted than a severe chronic pain that took years to develop. If there is chronic lower back pain or if you are nursing a chronic athletic injury from your youth, expect to get treated between 1 and 3 months. If there is pain due to side effects of radiation and or medication, his will also take more time to treat. If it is a really bad heroic or athletic injury it can take several months.
Since there is no exact time table that can be looked at, I like to start with a “trial run” to see how your rate of response is. That means I can treat for two weeks with intensive treatment twice or three times a week. Do you respond quickly to the treatment? Do you respond more slowly? Do you respond in between? This all factors in what I will recommend to you after the end of the two weeks. It takes some time for the body to respond so I recommend taking the “longer view” and see how well you will respond by the week overall, not just the immediate treatment as there can be a cumulative effect.
The biggest problem with acupuncture is nursing it in small dosages for pain. Acupuncture stimulates the body to reduce the pain, but just like a pain medication that needs to be taken regularly, acupuncture needs to be done regularly to get the results. Usually, treating more frequently at the beginning and then tapering off as the pain reduces, will yield the best result. I like to see how someone responds. This helps me to determine your rate of response upon which I make my recommendations. Patients appreciate the honesty and the trial as it gives them a chance to see how it works as well. Any form of “itis” tend to take longer than non-inflammatory conditions. I am very upfront with patients so they can understand the process, and can feel for themselves how the treatment is working.
