3 Simple Tips to Lower Your Stress

June 15, 2015 By Joshua Goldstein, Ridgewood Acupuncturist

3 Simple Tips to Lower Your Stress

Relax your Jaw Muscles: Your jaw muscles are chronic stress holders. Use acupressure to press in and relax tension immediately. It is so profoundly relaxing that it helps to relax you mentally as well.

To find, place your place your  jaw, you will find your muscle pop out. Press in with fingers to find and massage this spot. It’s usually located on the center of the jaw.   As you feel the tight spot, plant your finger on top of it and apply some pressure to it. Breathe in deeply and repeat for one minute. Clearing the pain of the jaw is a remarkable practice as it takes a lot of patience and the effects are cumulative. Releasing the jaw also releases tension and stress pent up in other areas of your body. So release your tension by working on this area,  one minute a  day will help you to de-stress easier.

2. Bounce up and down: Bouncing up and down helps the cerebrospinal fluid to circulate throughout the spine. You have a fluid that runs up and down the spine. Circulating it gently is a great way to reduce the stress and energize you without resorting to coffee.  Stand up straight, legs shoulder width apart. Focus on letting the knees g and then standing up straight. Repeat. Let your hands bounce freely at the sides of  your body.  Repeat this exercise for 3- 5 minutes. It can b done at the end of the day at home, or it can be done in a bathroom stall at the  very worst (a do that a lot). This is actually part of a routine in the spirit of the ancient art of Qi Gong, or energy exercises use to enhance energy and calm the mind. For the best results, do this exercise for  10 days  and be consistent!

3. Eat every 4 hours: If you start to fast, your body scrambles to find carbohydrates. This is not helpful when you are trying to lose weight and beat stress. To remedy eat some protein every four hours along with some veggies. At least make sure you are eating more protein with every meal instead of sugar pick me up foods (danishes, cookies you know real feel good foods). Then at night make sure to eat more complex carbs with your dinner  (whole wheat pasta, rice). This will help you release serotonin so you can sleep better while reducing stress hormones in the body and it will prevent you from gorging at night if you’ve been starving all day.
