3 EFFECTIVE STRESS REDUCTION TIPS THAT REALLY ELIMINATE YOUR STRESS – FOR RESIDENTS OF RIDGEWOOD AND BERGEN COUNTY NJ!

September 17, 2015 By Joshua Goldstein, Ridgewood Acupuncturist

ARE YOU LOOKING FOR NATURAL HELP WITH YOUR STRESS?

Is stress becoming the rule rather than the exception to your day?
Is stress becoming the rule rather than the exception to your day?

If you live in Bergen County, NJ, you are all too familar with the level of stress you are living with.Living in this fast paced area of Ridgewood, Paramus, Ramsey or even the surrounding Bergen County area for that matter, you know that the daily bombardment of trafficve and stress is part of the cost for living here! But because we think about it as normal,  doessn’t mean that stress doesn’t affect us.   However, whether you know it or not, your body can only take so much of a beating from stress whether you are conscious about it or not. Stress literally ages your body, causing you to age quicker, feel older and have difficulty dealing with change.  Day in and day out, your body is dumping stress hormones into your bloodstream, leading it down the path of disease and conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, fatigue, feeling unmotivated, and developing a paunch.

YOUR BODY IS NOT EQUIPPED TO FIGHT SABER-TOOTHED TIGERS DAY IN AND DAY OUT!

Stress triggers the release of specific stress hormones. These stress hormone such as norepinephrine, and cortisol, to name a few, ready your body to get into a battle with a saber toothed tiger.  These hormones elevate your blood pressure, sending more blood flow to the muscles, increasing your heart rate, and get you ready to fight or run away. However, humans were only designed to go through this fight or flight response rather quickly and then return to normalcy. They weren’t made to stay in this mode daily, for hours at a time. However, with the day to day schedule juggling that most people have, or putting in 12 hour days.  However, the body was not designed to stay in long marathon days.

Having stress hormones circulating in your blood stream due to a perceived stress, on an ongoing basis, is hazardous to your health. If you aren’t already feeling tired, crave chocolate and need coffee to get yourself moving in the morning, they you are moving to a life of high blood pressure, weight gain, fatigue, loss of energy, poorly motivated to do the things you love doing, afternoon crashes, feeling blues, or more anxiety and “wired” along with more stiffness and tightness in the neck, shoulders or back.

DOING THE “RIGHT” THING CAN MAKE THINGS WORSE!

Your attempts to exercise when you are stressed can backfire on you!
Your attempts to exercise when you are stressed can backfire on you!

If you are the type of person who likes to eat right and exercise, if stress hormones are not lowered in your body, exercising can spike the stress hormones by adding more stress to your body. So exercising could have the exact reverse effect on the body when you are in this state. Good intentions are actually worsened when your hormones create more stress  out of things that are supposed to ituations resulting in increased weight despite exercising.

PRESCRIPTION SLEEP MEDICATIONS NOT A LONG TERM FIX FOR THE PROBLEM OF STRESS.

Do you have trouble sleeping? You are not alone. Millions of Americans have tried sleeping medications know that they ae highly addictive, slow the brain the next day, increase weight, and don’t necessary gives you a more restful sleep.  Use them if you need them, but if you can correct the problems at the root core, reducing stress hormones, you’re just furthering the problem.

Has sleep become more of a struggle?

LEARN 3 POWERFUL TIPS THAT ELIMINATE STRESS AND START YOU FEELING BETTER TODAY!

  • Go to bed a half hour earlier during the week:
Get to sleep earlier and turn back time for your body!
Get to sleep earlier and turn back time for your body!

During stressed states, your body needs extra sleep. Studies show that taking a nap for 15 minutes can reduce your risk of heart attacks. This finding highlights the act that getting less sleep than your body needs causes heart problems such as heart attacks, high blood pressure and irregular heart beat. Simply put, the best thing you can do to stop the ravages of stress is to turn in to bed a half hour earlier every night. This starts to help you get the extra rest you need to restore yourself. One of the keys to fighting stress is to get more sleep. Most people who are “wired and tired” tend to get tired at the wrong time. Stressed people feel tired during the day, but feel wide awake and restless at night.  More sleep time, even if it is just “laying in bed “time, is critical for reversing the ravaging effects of stress. The thought of going to bed a half hour earlier may seem repressive, but giving yourself and your body more sleep time will help you feel more vibrant and energetic in the daytime. Besides, you have to ask yourself, do you really want to develop heart disease as you age?

  • Eat more complex carbs at night to relax:
Carbs are part of the plan for helping you relax again!
Carbs are part of the plan for helping you relax again!

All the diet books out there would be screaming “sacrilege” for suggesting this idea of eating some carbs at night to relax. But to a highly “wired and tired” person, eating two golf size portions of complex t carbohydrates (rice, pasta, or potato), for example, along with a protein for dinner. Eating carbohydrates in this way helps you to relax your body by creating the release of serotonin, the hormone that helps you relax. Studies show that chronically stressed, anxious and depressed people have a chronic deficiency of the serotonin hormone. So one way to benefit stressed out people is to eat more carbs at night since carbs can help relax you binging you out of your stressed stat. In fact, if you can get into better sleep you will actually lose more weight than gain weight. Remember, it’s the right amount of carbohydrates that really is the indicator of weight gain and weight loss. Eating too many carbs or too little carbs can actually cause you to pack on weight. Eating the right amount of carbs, creates a favorable hormonal environment that allows you to come down from the “fight-or-flight” stress response that you go through during that day and help you sleep better.

  • Get Acupuncture as part of your stress reduction program:

More and more people are turning to acupuncture to help regulate their moods and reduce stress!

Acupuncture has been promoted for relief of pain so few people know that acupuncture can help people deal with stress better! How can this be? Inserting needles into specific points in your body can majorly “chill out” the body and take a body from being both physically and mentally stressed and placing it into a deeply relaxed state. It does so by sending signals to the brain which releases endorphins at such a high level (beyond the “runner’s high”), that it nudges your body into a relaxed state. In this state your body will unwind and re-charge itself so you can feel more energized, profoundly relaxed, and with less achy muscles. Done repeatedly acupuncture can re-train your body how to remember how to relax again by training your brain to utilize the relaxation response rather than go to the default “fight-or-flight” response.

Now nothing is injected into the needles, but rather specific signals which travel though the muscles helps to spark the brain to release neurotransmitters helpful for inducing the relaxation response. Done, enough times over, acupuncture can help you re-train the nervous system to “remember” the relaxation response and to reset stress level thresholds which means you get more resistant to stress. What good is being frazzled and stressed out without the ability to enjoy life?
